They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”Matt 19:3

3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”

4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to divorce her.” ^{▼▼Deut 24:1, 3}Deut 24:1; Matt 5:31; 19:7

5 But Jesus said to them, “It was because of your hardness of heart that he wrote this command for you. 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God ^{▼▼Other mss. read He} made them male and female.’ ^{▼▼Gen 1:27; 5:2}Gen 1:27; 5:2 7 ‘That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife,Gen 2:24; 1Cor 6:16; Eph 5:31 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ ^{▼▼Gen 2:24} So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore, what God has joined together, man must never separate.”

10 Back in the house, the disciples asked him about this again. 11 So he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.Matt 5:32; 19:9; Luke 16:18; Rom 7:3; 1Cor 7:10-11 12 And if a woman ^{▼▼Lit. she} divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
